Journals Ltd on behalf of Spectrochimica Actn A is making an annual Award in memory of Sir Harold Thompson, who was for thirty years Editor of the Journal. All papers published in Spectrochimica Acta A are automatically considered for this Award, the Editorial Board being responsible for the selection of that which, in their opinion, makes the most significant contribution to Spectroscopy.

The award consists of a monetary prize of $1000 together with a presentation certificate and a special decanter and wineglass set.

For the second Award, for papers published in Volume 42A, 1986, the paper selected is that by J. E. Baggot, H. E. Clase and I. M. Mills, University of Reading, entitled "C-H local modes in cyclobutene-I. FTIR studies 70&9000 cm-'", Spectrochimica Acta 42A, 3 19-334 (1986).
