«Les Xeelees possédaient l'univers. Quand les hommes avaient émergé du système solaire en se traînant à vitesse subluminique sur les premiers vaisseaux GUT, ils étaient entrés dans un univers complexe, peuplé de nombreuses races intelligentes dont chacune obéissait à ses propres impératifs et poursuivait ses propres buts. [...] Moins de deux siècles après l'époque de Michael Poole, la Terre était conquise, puis transformée en camp de travail par les gestalts aquatiques que les humains avaient appelé les Squeems. [Mais] où que les hommes et les races qu'ils avaient rencontrées regardent, ils voyaient l'empreinte des Xeelees.
