✦ Synopsis

Certain aspects of construction, implementation and analysis are presented for unsteady compressible flow simulations using structured-grid book-keeping on a distributed memory MIMD hypercube computer. In this approach, suitable for single-zone computations, the physical region is broken up into as many computational domains as there are hypercube nodes. Interdomain (internodal) communication and synchronization are accomplished by passing messages. Topics in parallel computing discussed include: (1) domain decomposition; (2) types of interdomain communication; (3) communication buffers and internodal synchronization; (4) a method for estimating and analyzing performance:

(5) implementation of a flow solver based on the Navier-Stokes equations; and (6) results from simulation of unsteady flow in the wake of a cylinder and from vortex pairing in shear layers. The paper summarizes the authors' experiences and contributes a simple but useful method for predicting and measuring scalable performance.
