✦ Synopsis

This paper applies the Newton optimal power flow method to solve a single time period optimal VAR planning problem. It determines the minimum size and location of new compensators to be installed for a certain set of buses and system configuration. An enhanced Newton optimal power flow method is presented. A practical 217-bus system illustrates the performance of the developed solution method.
