✦ Synopsis

A single-ring piston ring and its sealing method is discussed. Either a circumferential scarf or step butt join is used. The assembly comprises a single-ring piston ring plus a pressure ring in a single groove. There is an oil collection groove below the piston ring groove with a drain port. The advantages claimed for the single-ring piston ring include enhanced sealing characteristics, fewer machining steps and low cost.
