✦ Synopsis

The structure of iodine is studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction up to 5.7 GPa. The present data confirm the conclusions that have been deduced from earlier high pressure powder X-ray diffraction experiments, i.e. that the intramolecular distance remains almost constant up to the phase transition at 21 GPa and the angle 0 between the molecular axis and the c-axis increases slightly.
