β¦ Synopsis
Manganese oxide has been used to determine the microwave absorption in an ESR spectrometer during the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in order to measure the absolute concentration of propagating radicals. The magnetic field for the manganese resonance showed an excellent correlation with the conversion of monomer to polymer determined by gravimetric and NMR methods. Thus the radical concentration and the conversion could be measured throughout the polymerization in a single experiment, enabling the kinetic parameters, kp and kt, to be determined directly.
