Abstract
On the basis of the theory of coupled waves the simultaneous diffraction of two waves at a plane dielelectric transmission volume hologram is described. The intensities of the output beams strongly depend on the phase shift between the incident waves and the phase shift of the holographic grating with respect to the interference pattern of the readβout waves. This gives the possibility to transfer the energy from one beam into the other and can be used for the modulation and deflection of the reconstructed beams. The possibility of a separate determination of the different phase shifts by intensity or phase measurements is discussed.
