✦ Synopsis


ESL is a continuous-system simulation language (CSSL) which is used for simulating the behavior of dynamic systems. ESL offers a number of features which are not commonly found in CSSLs. It can be operated as an interpreter (convenient in the development phase) or as a translator to FORTRAN (more efficient execution of production runs). It incorporates special features for describing and processing discontinuities and for supporting the modeling of digital (discrete) components. It supports distributed simulation and is capable of interfacing to other software packages in complex applications. ESL is useful in courses addressing dynamics and control, differential equations, and simulation methods. Several examples of its use are described ranging from very simple to advanced.
