Discrete event digital simulation techniques can play a useful role in the design phase of major engineering projects. An example of such an application is described. It concerns a simulation study of a proposed coal transhipment terminal to be built on Batam Island, Indonesia. The study assisted in comparing alternative berth and equipment configurations and verifying that the proposed port and materials handling equipment would operate effectively at the planned throughput tonnages.
