Using the revised plane wave method, we have calculated the photonic band structures of 2D metallic photonic crystals composed of parallel metallic rods in air background and air holes drilled in metal background. We discuss the maximization of gap-to-midgap ratio as a function of scatterer paramete
## Abstract Devices based on twoβdimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PCs) are typically realized as 3D structures consisting of an array of holes (or rods) vertically etched through a slab waveguide. The existence of holes in a slab waveguide may induce strong radiation losses to the slab claddings
