✦ Synopsis
The well-known image theory for a dipole abo¨e a plane interface of two isotropic media is extended to include the effect of a slightly rough interface to obtain the coherent part of the reflected field. The classical Gaussian reflection coefficient approximation is matched to the Fourier transformation of the problem. The image expression for a dipole source abo¨e the rough interface is obtained by simply applying concepts from the Hea¨iside operational calculus to a transmission-line analogy of the interface problem. The effect of the surface roughness to the image can be expressed as a con¨olution between the specular image and a roughness function.
