Ex-pro cyclist Paul Burke has a great gig β commentating on Spain's greatest bike race, the Vuelta a EspaαΏa, a three-week test of fitness and determination. To prepare, he and fellow broadcaster Colin Bothwick go on a reconnaissance ride for an upcoming stage. However, Bothwick leaves Burke on a whim and rides away, forcing Burke to travel the route alone. That evening, Burke gets a visit from two police officers. Bothwick has been found dead, the victim of a dreadful accident. When he hears the details, Burke doesn't believe his friend died in accident.
