Aquesta novel·la, considerada per la critica contemporània com la més important de George Eliot, narra les peripècies de Silas Marner, un home desgraciat que, després d’un desengany amorós i social, fuig de la seva ciutat i s’instal·la com a teixidor al poble de Raveloe, on porta una vida tranquil·la, encara que solitària i desarrelada, dedicant-se en cos i ànima a treballar i a acumular diners. No obstant això, dos successos inesperats canviaran la seva amarga monotonia: el robatori dels seus diners i la sobtada aparició a casa d’una nena òrfena.
