SUMMARY
Coeliac disease is characterized by gluten intolerance and immunologically mediated damage to small intestinal mucosa. Patients classically present with gastrointestinal symptoms including chronic diarrhoea, steatorrhoea, weight loss, anorexia and abdominal distension. In a substantial proportion of cases however, gastrointestinal symptoms are minor or absent, and cutaneous manifestations may provide an early clue to diagnosis. Early recognition of coeliac disease, with appropriate implementation of a glutenβfree diet, may reduce the incidence of benign and malignant complications associated with this condition.
