β¦ Synopsis
During a n ecological study of the Florida Everglades, detergent.like-foams were noticed frequently along the shoreline and on t'he surface of the water. Upon examination, i t was discovered that these foams contained very thick concentrations of various species of micro-algae which had adsorbed to the bubbles along with organics and ot'her particulate material. The oceanic foams and scums often seen along weed lines and windrows at sea were also found t,o contain very large numbers of micro-algae (MAYNARD 1968).
Observations have shown that fragments of these foams are picked up by t,he wind and carried aloft. Wave action, accompanied by particulate-laden which burst bubbles upon reaching the surface, contributes addit'ional means of t'ransferring the various organisms from the water into t.he air.
