studied self-consistently with respect to the neutron and proton pairing gaps and the deformation parameters E and 'y. A signature-dependent deformation is found as a result of differences in the deformation-driving properties of the excited quasiparticles.

The calculations can only partly explain the experimentally observed signature splitting and a discussion of possible explanations for the remaining discrepancy between the theoretically calculated rotational bands and experiment is given.
