✦ Synopsis

For more than a generation the name of Tecwyn Williams has been particularly associated with the subject of detoxication mechanisms, those biochemical transformations which foreign substances undergo in the body, and it was fitting that the symposium held in honour of his retirement should have been concerned with this subject.

This book consists of twenty four papers read at the symposium, and presents an excellent picture of our present knowledge. The metabolism of drugs is discussed from every angle. The mechanisms by which these take placeoxidation at carbon and nitrogen, conjugation with glucuronic acid, sulphate and glutathione-are fully dealt with, as are their applications in a wide variety of species, ranging from man, through primate and non-primate mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates and plants, to microbes. Discussion is not confined to laboratory species, and mention is made of such exotic creatures as the slow loris, the wombat and the stingray. The horse has a paper to itself.

Other papers deal with drug metabolizing enzymes, cell-culture, pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics, while Professor Williams himself contributes a section on the possible future developments in this field which he has made so particularly his own.
