โœฆ Synopsis

The Short Wavelength Spectrometer is one of the four astronomical instruments in the Infrared Space Observatory. At the input of this cryogenic spectrometer, two shutters select one of the three entrance slits. A fourth setting closes the entrance for dark-current measurements. The design of the shutters and results of performance tests on a prototype are the subject of this paper. The shutter vanes are mounted on cross-spring flexure pivots; results of cryogenic lifetime tests on these pivots are also discussed.

The short wavelength behavior of spin excitations has been investigated by means of 2-magnon Raman spectroscopy in YBa2Cu306+ x , La2CuO4, and Nd2CuO 4. The resonance behavior indicates a scattering mechanism via a Cu-3d O-2p charge tran.qfer excitation. In the undoped material the temperature depen
