โฆ Synopsis
In 198(~ a long term nation-wide research programme on short rotation forestry for energy was started in Austria. Field tests (70 ha) were established in 1986 and 1987; about 500 ha socalled "practical trials' followed and are currently also being documented and observed. Species and clones of the genera Alnus, Betula, Populus, Robinia, Salix and Sorbus were cultivated in 70 varied sites spread over Austria.
Techniques for soil preparation, preventive weed control and planting were compared and discussed; climate and soil requirements were also examined. Necessity and methods of tending (weed control, plant replacement, coppicing) were evaluated, as was fertilization. Abiotic and biotic damages were documented in detail with emphasis being put on preventive measures.
The next stage of the programme will concentrate on technical aspects of coppicing, chipping, transportation, drying and storage.
