✦ Synopsis

Variations in the reactivity of Nan for 100 ~< n ~< 800 with molecular oxygen are reported. They can be understood in terms of the recently observed large electronic shell closing effects in sodium clusters.

Reactions of cooled, size-selected aluminum cluster ions (Al: , n = l-8) with oxygen have been studied at collision energies from 0.15 to 10.0 eV (center-of-mass) under single-collision conditions. With the exception of the atomic ion, all size clusters undergo exoergic reactions which result in ext
