โฆ Synopsis

Steel-Concrete-Steel construction developed in recent years comprises two mild steel plates connected to a concrete core using shear stud connectors. This form of construction has the potential to combine the advantages of both steel and reinforced concrete construction. This paper investigates the shear mechanisms and resistance of the Steel-Concrete-Steel (SCS) beams by using the concepts and theory of shear resistance for reinforced concrete beams. After a simple review of shear resistance in the Design Guide for SCS Sandwich Construction, shear strengths of concrete and steel in the beams are compared respectively with those of the reinforced concrete beams predicted by BS 8110, EC2, AC1 318-83, and the Chinese Code GBJ 10439. Numerical examples from the SCS test beams are computed and some comments on the shear resistance of the beams are made.
