## Abstract This paper presents a concept of a dual‐band dual‐port microstrip base station antenna for mobile telecommunication systems. The main part of the paper describes considerations on the antenna array configuration as well as antenna pattern synthesis. As an application example, a model of

✦ Synopsis
In this paper, a shaped-beam pattern is synthesized for a base station antenna in a mobile communication system by controlling only the excitation phases of the array elements. We first employ the weighting function to construct an objecti¨e function in a minimum mean-square-error sense, which will then be minimized by the quasi-Newton method. Two synthesis examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and capability of this proposed method.
