The scientists have shown that under suitable conditions, Core-Shell Microgel (CSMG) nanoparticles, when heated to the proper temperature, "bob" to the surface of a thin polymer film. Significantly, when the nanoparticles are heated a second time, they reversibly recede back below the surface. CSMG nanoparticles consist of a core made up of a cross-linked polymer, and a surrounding shell made up of a different polymer. In their work, the authors used CSMG nanoparticles comprising a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shell, and explored their behaviour in molten PMMA thin films.
