✦ Synopsis
The growth of crystalline domains of the polymerizable lipid dimethyl-bis-( hexacosan-2,4-diinoyI)oxaethyl) ammonium bromide in a monolayer at the air/water interface is observed by fluorescence microscopy. Structure formation is characterized by a large anisotropy of growth velocity revealing four non-orthogonal, but well-defined orientations. Domains with dimensions up to 200 urn are uniform with respect to orientation of the polymer backbone. Peculiar domain shapes allow characterization of the underlying lattice, particularly on the interrelation between crystallographic axes, polymerization axes and axes of preferred domain growth. This suggests a model of molecular arrangement allowing for non-random network formation m the polymerized monolayer.
