✦ Synopsis
Abstract
A sex pheromone from Platynereis dumerilii females was extracted from the coelomic fluid of ripe heteronereids by a closed loop stripping technique. It was identified by coupled gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy and synthesis as 3,5‐octadien‐2‐one. In an electrophysiological bioassay, the two isomers of this substance were found to be active on both sexes. In contrast, in behavioural bioassays no effect was found on males while female heteronereids were induced to release eggs.
