Abstract
Of 48 cases of gonococcal arthritis seen between 1952 and 1958, 10, or 22 per cent, were males. The low incidence observed in males is in distinct contrast to the high incidence in this group reported prior to the antibiotic era. It is suggested that this change in sex incidence is the result of prompt treatment of the preceding symptomatic primary gonorrhea in the heterosexual male, whereas primary gonorrhea in the female is often unrecognized.
