✦ Synopsis
The surface of colloidal silver particles sedimented on a cover-glass was used to observe SERS spectra of phthalazine. Two methods were introduced to prepare the surface. Phthalazine was found to be converted photochemically into an adsorbed species resembling an ortho-substituted benzene after cleavage of the NxN bond in the molecule. The photochemical reaction was found to be a one-photon process with green light. The reaction rate was considerably increased in the presence of water as a medium. Water may provide some driving force to convert the excited phthalazine into the photoproduct.
