β¦ Synopsis
Inoculation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with the non-host pathogen Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei (barley powdery mildew) results in an increased resistance of the plants against a challenge infection with the wheat powdery mildew pathogen E. graminis f.sp. tritici 12 hours to a few days later [ 8 ]. Concomitant with the onset of this induced resistance is the activation of putative defence genes. Previously, 6 cDNAs (WlR1 to WIR6) representing mRNAs transcribed from such induced genes have been cloned [8]. Here we report that a pathogen-induced cDNA clone corresponding to WIR2 encodes a thaumatin-like protein.
Partial sequences obtained from the WlR2 cDNA clone and the fact that its 1.25 kb insert hybridized to a m R N A of about 800 nucleotides suggested that the WlR2 clone contained a chimaeric insert. Therefore, we used this clone to screen a pBluescript cDNA library representing mRNA extracted from leaves of T. aestivum L. cv. Cheyenne which had been inoculated with E.
