✦ Synopsis
Chemical models for self-replicating systems are of central interest in studies on chemical evolution.['] Our demonstration of the autocatalytic synthesis of the self-complementary hexadeoxynucleotide 3 a from the two complementary trideoxynucleotides 1 a and 2a in the presence of l-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) as activator provided the first evidence that self-replication is possible in enzyme-free minimal systems and can be studied using the methods of bioorganic chemistry.[21 The key observation was the involvement of the hexamer 3a with a reaction order of 1/2 in the kinetics of its own synthesis.['] This finding has meanwhile been corroborated with a second system consisting of oligonucleotide component^.'^^
