โœฆ Synopsis

A liquid ion-exchange membrane was developed for the separation and quantitative recovery of iron, as Fe3+, and other cations from natural waters under controlled pH conditions. The influence of the pH of the aqueous sample on the extraction of eleven cations is illustrated. Quantitative extractions of Fe"+, Co'+ and Ca'+ at concentrations of 0.1-1.0 pg I-' from aqueous solutions are demonstrated. The average recovery of Fe3+ under optimized conditions is 99.5% with a relative standard deviation of 1.7% (n = 8). Ion conr, entrations are measured by atomic absorption spectrometry.

Natural water samples are normally filtered through a 0.45 pm membrane filter before analysis. Such filters clog rapidly, however, when the content of humic acids is high. An alternative approach for natural water filtration is reported in this paper. Sample solutions are pumped into tubing containi
