## Abstract Doping of pure KCl with oxygen in a closed system leads to formation of a new oxygen containing centre. Absorption, fluorescence, and ESR spectroscopy have been used together with chemical analysis to characterise the centre. It is suggested that the centre is an O^2−^~2~‐anion vacancy
