✦ Synopsis
Rose's short book is intended for "advanced students of mathematics with no previous knowledge of mathematical logic, who are interested in the logical operation and design of computers". It is primarily an extended treatment of elementary propositional calculus and its application to switching circuits.
The book also contains a much shorter presentation of some of the basic logic design problems such as two-level realizations of combinational functions, elementary analysis and synthesis of finite state sequential circuits, state reduction of sequential functions and realizations of basic arithmetic units such as parallel adders. More advanced problems such as efficient state variable assignments for sequential functions, and hazards in asynchronous circuits are just mentioned in passing. Several problems and worked out solutions to most of the problems are included at the end of each section.
While the book contains no major errors the scope is effectively restricted to a rather extensive exploration of a small part of the subject of logical design of digital switching circuits. Any advantage over several other existing books which offer much more comprehensive coverage and which also contain introductory sections for the beginning student, is not apparent.
