β¦ Synopsis
Oscillatory movement of liquid in a U-tube is induced by supplying air through two injectors at the same level, one in each limb of the U. Both injectors are fed from the same constant-pressure air supply; thus the air has two alternative paths into the U-tube, and flows into the limb with the lower level. This switching of the air from limb to limb gives an energy input to the oscillation which is balanced against energy dissipation. Formulae are given for the amplitude which agree reasonably well with experiment.
The results are expected to be relevant to the problem of bubble induced oscillations on sieve trays.
