โฆ Synopsis
Measurements of the self-diffusion coefficients of sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sullite ions and sulfite ions in aqueous solutions have been made using 3% as tracer. The experiments were carried out at pH O-3,45 and 9.0 and it is assumed that each solution at these pH values is a nearly pure solution of the molecules or ions mentioned above. It is also assumed that there is no diffusional interaction between the three diffusing species [3]. The effects of temperature, total ion concentration and cations on the diffusion coefficient of hydrosulfifite ions have been investigated.
The method involves the preparation of two similar solutions differing only in the fact that one is labeled by the radioactive 3%. Capillary-cells filled with the radioactive solution were immersed in a large volume of inactive solution. After diffusion the cells were removed and the radioactivity of the contents measured by counting. The diffusion coefficients were calculated from the lengths of the capillary cells, the time of diffusion and the ratio of the fmal activity to the original activity. Selected literature data of the diffusivity of sulfur dioxide in water are included for comparison.
