โœฆ Synopsis

The self-consistent electronic structure at the interface of liquid helium films on solid substrates is calculated as a function of the surface electronic charge density. The total potential includes the Hartree potential, the exchangecorrelation potential in the local density approximation, the external electric field and the image potential. The interband optical resonances at fixed density N, = 106 el/cm 2, and calculated as a function of the clamping electric fields agree very well with the optical experiments on very thick helium films (bulk limit). We also found a cut-off in the image potential, /3 = ! .005 A., which differs slightly from previous values reported in the literature, and includes the effects of Hartree and exchange-correlation potentials at zero electric field.

With contributions from both three-dimensional (3D) electrons in heavily doped contacts and 2D electrons in the accumulation layer, a self-consistent calculation based on effective mass theory is presented for studying the anomalous behaviour of the quasi-bound levels in the accumulation layer and t
