In this paper new aspects on the self-assembly processes of didentate coordinating ligands leading to a double-stranded helicate are described. It was reported, that directionality in the self-recognition of Cu I ions could be driven by factors relating to the electronic configuration of heterocycles in carefully designed heterotopic ligands.
