✦ Synopsis

An easily assembled catalyst from (±)-BINOL (1,1%-bi-naphthol) and Zr(O i Pr) 4 • i PrOH selectively reduces aldehydes at room temperature. Ketones remain intact under these conditions. A catalytic amount of BINOL-Zr complex in the presence of 2-propanol also effectively reduces a variety of chiral and achiral aldehydes.

The complex generated from BINOL, Zr(O t Bu) 4 , and 4 A , MS in toluene-pivalonitrile is very effective for catalytic asymmetric allylation of aldehydes using allyltributyltin. The reactions of achiral aldehyde under these conditions are completed within 3 h using 10-20 mol% of the complex at -20°C
