Philosophical Studies to print some of the best papers from the 1990 Pacific Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association, he granted editorial authority for the issue to the Pacific Division Program Committee. It was decided by the Committee, in consultation with the Pacific Division Executive Committee, to print whole papers, not abstracts, to include some contributed papers, and to leave the final editorial decisions to me as chair of the 1990--91 Program Committee (Holly Smith, the 1989--90 chair has resigned from the Committee due to pressures of other duties). A letter was sent to all those giving invited papers at the 1990 Pacific Division meeting, asking if they would like their papers considered for the special issue. About four out of five replied in the affirmative. This gave us a pool of about seventy-five long
