✦ Synopsis

There are a number of conditions which can produce cells and elements which can mimic malignant cells in respiratory cytology specimens. ' Some, such as vegetable cells, pose problems mainly for the relatively inexperienced observer. Others, such as chemotherapy effect, can produce such perfect mimics that even experienced observers sometimes cannot make a definitive diagnosis. Clinical history may be very helpful in such situations, but in others, such as mycetoma, even radiologic findings can mimic carcinoma, making such cases quite problematic.

Following are examples of some classic pitfalls in the diagnosis of malignancy in sputum and bronchoscopic cytology specimens. The diagnostic criteria for the entities presented are compared and contrasted with those of the malignancies with which they are confused.

## BACKGROUND. Accurate diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (MM) in effusion fluid specimens can be challenging. Previous cytogenetic studies demonstrated that chromosomal aneusomy is commonly associated with MM. The authors attempted to determine whether the detection of numerical chromosomal abe

## Abstract The HLA‐G molecule has been implicated in the escape from the host antitumor immune response. Besides, this molecule appears also to be detected in transplant recipient's tissues, mainly those with fewer rejection episodes. Since skin carcinomas develop frequently in organ transplant re

This study was undertaken to assess the utility of combined cytokeratin (CK) 7/20 immunoprofile determination in malignant cytologic cell blocks as an aid to the identification of tumor primary site of origin. Fifty-one cases in which CK 7/20 immunocytochemistry was performed as part of the initial
