โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Externally bonded (eb) fibreโ€reinforced polymers (FRPs) have been employed extensively throughout the world in numerous rehabilitation applications of reinforced concrete or masonry structures. This paper focuses on the seismic retrofitting (removal of seismic deficiency) of RC elements (mainly columns, but also walls and beamโ€“column joints) and masonry walls by means of FRPs. Basic retrofit issues, namely shear strengthening and increase of confinement at plastic hinge or lap splice regions, are summarized first and a summary of application techniques is given. Some key behaviour and design aspects for shearโ€strengthened or FRPโ€confined members are provided and a brief description of some recent developments related to the seismic strengthening of beamโ€“column joints is presented. Finally, key issues on the seismic retrofitting of masonry walls for inโ€plane or outโ€ofโ€plane action are discussed.
