Abstract
Externally bonded (eb) fibreโreinforced polymers (FRPs) have been employed extensively throughout the world in numerous rehabilitation applications of reinforced concrete or masonry structures. This paper focuses on the seismic retrofitting (removal of seismic deficiency) of RC elements (mainly columns, but also walls and beamโcolumn joints) and masonry walls by means of FRPs. Basic retrofit issues, namely shear strengthening and increase of confinement at plastic hinge or lap splice regions, are summarized first and a summary of application techniques is given. Some key behaviour and design aspects for shearโstrengthened or FRPโconfined members are provided and a brief description of some recent developments related to the seismic strengthening of beamโcolumn joints is presented. Finally, key issues on the seismic retrofitting of masonry walls for inโplane or outโofโplane action are discussed.
