Abstract

This review presents the most recent trends in bridge design, assessment and retrofitting. An appraisal of the damage caused by recent earthquakes and the typical problems encountered introduces a discussion of the current status of research: consideration of seismic input and interaction with the soil, including liquefaction of soil, recent code provisions and some proposals emerging from recent research in relation to design concepts and philosophy, and methods of analysis. Assessment and strengthening of existing bridges, including artificial isolation, are also reviewed.
