✦ Synopsis
The Keban Dam, which is being completed on the Euphrates, is in the eastern part of Turkey. The dam is a multi-purpose one. D.S.I. and I.S.K. have started a project for the investigation of the seismic activities both before and after impounding. The dam geology consists of sediments, intrusives and metamorphic rocks. The dam site has been subjected to tectonic activities in the past. Crossed faults in N--S and E--W directions and complex crack systems exist. It is hoped that the seismic instrumentation will yield information with regard to: the location of the epicentres; fault-zone seismic activity after impounding; buried fault systems; interrelation between seismic activity and the reservoir level; description of low-stress rocks and displacements; velocity and acceleration.
