✦ Synopsis

Fluid&d beds of widely sized particles can be subject to segregation which when severe can result in bed defluidization. Mixing and segregation was studied in fluid&d beds of circular (0.21 m diam) and square (0.61 x 0.61 m and 1.22 x 1.22 m) cross-section. Experimental mixing data were obtained for binary mixtures composed of sands ranging from 160 to 2850 pm size. Several empirical relationships for mixing index were examined. These require a value for U,,, the take-over velocity, for which the relationships tested were found to give inadequate predictions. A new relationship: is proposed for the estimation of the take-over velocity of a binary mixture which enables a good prediction of mixing behaviour. In this relationship, U, and U, are the minimum fluidizing velocities of the flotsam and ietsam comnonents resuectivelv. d, is the uarticle diameter ratio of the jetsam relative to the flotsam and D, : w. _

## Abstract The steady‐state segregation and dispersion of a binary system of particles in a liquid‐fluidized bed was investigated. One of the species had a density of 1,600 kg/m^3^ and the other 1,900 kg/m^3^, and both exhibited a narrow size range of 1.00 to 1.18 mm. A generalized model for descr
