Fluid&d beds of widely sized particles can be subject to segregation which when severe can result in bed defluidization. Mixing and segregation was studied in fluid&d beds of circular (0.21 m diam) and square (0.61 x 0.61 m and 1.22 x 1.22 m) cross-section. Experimental mixing data were obtained for binary mixtures composed of sands ranging from 160 to 2850 pm size. Several empirical relationships for mixing index were examined. These require a value for U,,, the take-over velocity, for which the relationships tested were found to give inadequate predictions. A new relationship: is proposed for the estimation of the take-over velocity of a binary mixture which enables a good prediction of mixing behaviour.
