A segmented polyurethane elastomer, originally developed for elastic thread, is now being used for molded prostheses. Chemical, mechanical, and biological properties are described. Hydrolytic stability of this polymer is compared to that of a polyester urethan. Experience with the material used in c

β¦ Synopsis
Segmented polyurethane does not induce acute toxicity when subjected to intracutaneous and intravascular tests with mice and rabbits. Specimens, which have been implanted in dogs for 18 months, exhibit stability heretofore unattributed to the general class of polyurethanes. Data on tensile properties, abrasion resistance when wet, tolerance to autoclaving, results of acute toxicity tests, and stability of long-term implants are described along with appropriate means of processing the polymer into useful biomedial devices.
