✦ Synopsis
We report on a simple method for the measurement of the Seebeck coefficient a on p-Hg 1± ±x Cd x Te (x % 0.2) samples in a natural temperature gradient established in a He-bath cryostat in the range from 10 to 280 K. The a of a bulk sample is shown to agree well with the theoretical calculation based on the independent fit of the conductivity and Hall coefficient. The transport in surface states is estimated and the type of the surface layer (inversion or accumulation) is determined. The procedure allows to hit a above 50 K very well. The measurements at lower temperatures show a sizable deviation and only a qualitative description is recommended.
