✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Sedimentation velocity measurements have been employed to investigate the molecular conformation of poly(sodium styrenesulfonate‐co‐2‐vinylnaphtha‐lene) (PSSS‐VN) in aqueous solution. Single symmetrical boundaries were observed in the molecular weight range of 7‐2‐33‐6 10^4^, indicating that PSSS‐VN exists as a single macromolecular coil and not as an aggregate in aqueous solution. Based on the value of the exponent in the power law which describes the dependence of the weight‐average molar mass on the sedimentation coefficient (S), PSSS‐VN behaves as a Gaussian coil dissolved in a solvent of moderate quality. Solubilization of eight molecules of 9‐methylanthracene within the core of PSSS‐VN produced no detectable change in the value of the sedimentation coefficient.
