The problems associated with the signalling system has been recognized as a national security issue as terrorists and hackers can potentially upset a country's economy by manipulation of their signalling. The major problem worldwide is that this signalling system is so pervasive that it will take many years to prepare standards and to make changes to the system to provide for message authentication, confidentiality and nonrepudiation.
