✦ Synopsis

A gas is enclosed in a two-dimensional rectangular container. One of the container long walls oscillates in the direction of its normal. A secondary vortical flow appears in the container. The dimensions of the container are smaller than the sonic wavelength associated with the vibrating wall, and the resulting secondary motion is quite different from that obtained by Rayleigh for containers with dimensions much larger than the sonic wavelength. The analysis employs a two-scales expansion, which is applied to a one-dimensional flow model.
