✦ Synopsis
Scanning electron microscope and DTA investigations were made to characterize secondary ettringite formation in portland cement concrete mixtures with varying W/C ratios and heat treatment maximum temperatures. After a 500 days storage programme including water and air storage as well as freezing/thawing cycles no expansion phenomena could be detected on test specimens. Secondary ettringite formation within the investigated concrete mixtures seems to be limited by density of concrete structure the properties of which are influenced by W/C ratio. Ettringite crystal morphology is varying with respect to growth conditions as solution supply and space for crystallization.
